Kierkegaard perceptively identifies this subjective turn as early as 1843 in his publication of Fear and Trembling. They have to be able to reflect-in- and -on-action, engage with feelings, and be able to make informed and committed judgements. Perhaps the use of this particular convention is due to the fact that, being stupid, affectionate, gregarious, and easily stampeded, the societies formed by sheep are most like human ones. The experience may well be enriching for both. Eliot, though not explicitly associated with the movement, expressed a similar critical-aesthetic philosophy in his essays on John Donne and the metaphysical poets, writers who Eliot believed experienced a complete integration of thought and feeling.
