In it, Dvorak at times drifts fairly far afield from the well-worn terrain of the “Slavonic Dances.” Indeed, the third movement of the quartet could be mistaken for the work of one of Dvorak’s German contemporaries. This helps the soloist to be heard over the large number of musicians that are accompanying him or her. It could stand as a miniature tone-poem of Czech village life described by a highly sensitive man. George Bernard Shaw, in a classic example of love-hate, made him the poster-boy for Victorian gentility.

American composer George Gershwin and his music covers the classical and popular genre. A violin sonata is a musical composition for violin, which is nearly always accompanied by a piano or other keyboard instrument, or by figured bass in the Baroque period. The canonic parts may occur at the unison or some other interval. entrances (as in a round or canon), but after the beginning of the phrase, the parts diverge into separate diatonic: a seven-note scale with a regular pattern of 5 whole and 2 half steps.

This sonata, written at roughly the same time as the grand, well-loved orchestral “Don Juan,” contains that same sort of melody and lusciousness in miniature. Beethoven greatly admired Mozart's piano concertos, with their constant sense of spontaneity and delight, but did not pursue these qualities in his own concertos. Schumann’s scenes are more of an evocation of the festive spirit that pervaded Vienna during the season than a literal depiction of Carnival.
