The islands depended on the sugar trade which in turn depended on slave labour. The Freedmen's Bureau was created in 1865 to help the former slaves. He knew that under the Constitution, there was no tool to eradicate it in the South. So you might think, in the interest of consistency, the French would have ended the slave trade and liberated their chattels at that time. This policy was slowly implemented in Missouri. Strengthened family and community ties, access to education and political experience, the ability to leave the southern countryside for urban centers in the North as well as the South – all such gains helped the descendants of slaves not only to survive Jim Crow but eventually to triumph over it. Mary Hines, a former slave, told her granddaughter that the slaves were not allowed to gather in groups to pray. Finally, in 1873 a new law was made that said slavery was no longer legal. The rioters' actions also indicate the degree to which the sensational journalists and reformers of the 1840s and 1850s had achieved their goals of convincing whites, and particularly the Irish, that interracial socializing and marriage were evil and degrading practices.

In the context of Trinidad’s slave society, where members of various tribes were mixed and mingled on plantations for security reasons, these groupings or societies of Africans continued, but had assimilated European systems of order and designation. The New Testament admonishes slaves to obey their masters (1 Peter 2:18; Ephesians 6:5-8; Titus 2:9-10; Colossians 3:22-25; 1 Timothy 6:1), yet also tells slaves not to accept their slavery (1 Corinthians 7:21-23, NIV). That country created apartheid as it, like the American South, developed a more urban and industrial economy based on racial subordination.
